| Challenger was bred at Wye College and released for commercial production in 1972. One of the few recognized all-purpose hops combining moderate amounts of alpha acid with a good kettle aroma. It is a grand-daughter of Northern Brewer crossed with a downy mildew-resistant male, and is a 'cousin' of Target. It is grown in the West Midlands and Kent, and also in small quantities in Belgium and France. With a mild to moderate fruity, almost scented aroma, with spicy overtones, this a versatile kettle hop for all types of beer. It blends well with other English varieties. One of the few recognized dual-purpose hops combining moderate amounts of alpha acids with a good kettle hop aroma. A result of Wye's efforts to combine higher levels of alpha acids with technically good aroma, disease resistance, and good agronomic properties. Released in 1968. Typical use is aroma., however some find it to be a poor aroma hop. A clean bittering hop. Gives a sharp bittering and black currant-like flavor when used in the boil. | |||||||||||||||||
